The Illustration
Thousands of years ago, indigenous people
illustrated animals and men on cave walls in
southern France, southern Utah and Australia.
The need to express oneself became a way of life.
At the University of Utah, I studied under truly
great artists like Professor Alvin Gittins "one of
the United States greatest portrait artists ever”
and Professor Angelo Caravaglia a “three-dimen-
sional designer... and a highly expressive
sculptor”.Professor Robert Olpin, Art Historian
Sublime, taught me to study and research as
no other person ever did before.
The Drawing
Serious students of the arts learn to master
many tools such as the pen, pencil, pastel,
charcoal, brush and other means to draw
and paint.
Studies of the human form is the most difficult
of disciplines to conquer. Even Picasso, known
mostly for his modern expressions, did master
the early requirements. He painted a number
of subjects in a very realistic style such as:
Picasso’s son, Self Portrait, the First
Communion, the Artist’s Mother, Matador
and Luis Miguel Dominguin, etc.
The Digital Image
Modern technology allows artists to create many
images. However, without having to learn the
basic elements of the fine arts, very little can be
accomplished.
Fortunately, because of software programs like
Aldus Freehand and Adobe PhotoShop, much can
be done to express oneself in new images, either
for clients of just for fun.
Like the brush and pencil, the mouse is only
a tool to create on a computer’s blank canvas.
